Subject Title
Surgical Assisting and Radiology

Subject Description
This course is designed to provide Veterinary Assistant Students with the working knowledge to be able to safely assist veterinary professionals with procedures such as anaesthesia and radiology. Students will be provided with the skill set to be able to safely aid in the process of patient restraint during induction and recovery from anaesthesia, assisting with radiographic positioning, processing of film, medical documentation and record keeping. The focus species will be canine and feline, but other species encountered will also be discussed. 

 
 Furthermore, the student will become proficient in the identification and preparation of materials involved in routine surgery, including patient and surgery room preparation and surgical personnel preparation. Principles of sterilization, asepsis, and disinfection techniques will be emphasized.

Animal handling and restraint skills acquired in VGH 100 and VSA 200 will be reinforced throughout this course.

A. Surgical Techniques

1. Describe and explain surgical terminology.
2. Describe the equipment used for anesthetizing animals found at the Animal Health Center, including appropriate selection of breathing circuits and gas delivery systems.
3. List and describe the steps involved in anesthetizing animals for common surgical procedures and a working knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment.
4. Describe and demonstrate a working knowledge of how to aseptically prepare a surgical theatre for a number of surgical procedures, including pack preparation, pre-surgical setup, surgical protocol, and other care of surgical equipment.
5. Describe and demonstrate a working knowledge of aseptically preparing a patient for surgery and maintaining sterility during the procedure.
6. Identify common suture materials, types, and sizes.
7. Aid the veterinarian/and or veterinary technician with physical monitoring of recovering surgical patients.
8. Maintain the Surgical Log

B. Radiography 

 
 1. Describe the factors, techniques and devices used to optimize radiographic quality. 
 2. Discuss the dangers of radiation and methods to avoid radiation injury. 
 3. Explain the proper positioning of animals for various radiographic studies. 
 4. Identify the anatomy of the radiograph. 
 5. Demonstrate safe operation of the X-ray unit and Set up software for patient acquisition. 
 6. Understand the various positions and views of dental radiology. 
 7. Maintain X-Ray log 
 8. Apply a working knowledge of patient positioning respective to the views required.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
