Salvage, Explosives and Welding

Subject Description
This subject is designed to provide basic theory based on the requirements of today's diving industry

Regardless of where in the world that a diving operation is carried out, be it on an offshore oil rig in the North Sea or a dredging barge in the Great lakes, a diver's main duties will involve the recovery of items lost overboard.

This subject will help you achieve the basic knowledge of the light salvage techniques required by the diving industry of today.

In this subject you will examine the use of various techniques, tools and methods required to locate and recover objects lost underwater. Emphasis will be placed on the theory and application of internal and external lifting, patching and lifting methods as well as the use of compressed air and pumping of ships hulls. This subject also covers salvage laws, types of contracts used and restoration of objects recovered.

The use of explosives in underwater construction and salvage operations has many advantages: speed, economy in labour and materials, elimination of the need for a sizable array of elaborate and specialized heavy floating equipment, and savings in expense. 

This subject will give the student an introduction into explosives and the safety requirements as required by the diving industry of today.

  1. Explain the different types of contracts awarded for marine salvage operations including; lump sum, cost plus and No-cure No-pay.
  2. Explain the principles of airlifting and waterjetting equipment.
  3. Explain the principles of using buoyancy for lifting and lifting bags and determine procedures required to lift a given object.
  4. Demonstrate the skill to perform the logistical, organizational and functioning calculations to effect the salvage of a submerged object.
  5. Produce a written report of a salvage plan.
  6. Explain the various types of explosive products available.
  7. Explain the difference between non-electric and electric blasting circuits.
  8. Explain the safety precautions to be taken before undertaking blasting jobs.
  9. Explain the requirements of handling misfires and hangfires.
  10. Explain how to dispose of surplus and/or deteriorated explosive products.
  11. Explain the safety precautions to be taken when using explosive products

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
