Career Strategies

Subject Description
Accurate and timely information is imperative in today's changing job market. This course is designed to engage the students in a variety of hands-on exploration modules to help provide a strong foundation for job readiness and career mapping in the tourism and hospitality industries. The course focuses on developing essential skills by promoting team building, career and personal development, research and communication which will allow students to find, evaluate, manage, update a resume and expand their career goals.

Credit Status
One credit toward the Tourism Services Managment - Travel Specialization diploma.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Assess your individual employability skills to effectively create a professional resume and cover letter.

Elements of Performance

a. Analyze personal skills, interests and values through self-assessment.
b. Use knowledge of strengths and weaknesses to identify strategies for self-improvement.
c. Create your brand statement.


2. Use information technology to explore available resources for finding and evaluating potential career opportunities and internships.

a. Differentiate between job and career
b. Organizational corporate culture
c. Value of memberships and associations
d. E-Portfolio


3. Compose written and oral communications to support professional business writing, correspondence, proper etiquette and networking skills.

a. Discuss the difference between hard skills and soft skills.
b. Develop the clarity in your business communication (Verbal and writing).
c. Learn the etiquette for writing business emails, cold calling and follow up emails.
d. Practice and refine the soft employability skills.


4. Apply interview techniques in preparation for a variety of interview methods.

a. Analyze and discuss the different types of interviews
b. Participate in group building exercises to develop skills
c. Develop effective communication strategies and practice them (Like the elevator pitch)
d. Develop a successful attitude alongside positive thinking and behaviour.


5. Apply professional standards of business etiquette, dress, hygiene and grooming consistent with Hospitality and Tourism industry business standards.
