Technical Project

Subject Description

This course serves as the culmination of the Mechanical Technician CNC Programming program in which students apply the skills and competencies acquired throughout their studies in the realization of a major working project. The project focuses on CNC programming, CNC setup, CNC machining, testing, troubleshooting and implementation and will typically be related to solving a practical application problem in the manufacturing industry.

Students work in small groups and are introduced early in the course to CNC project principles and practices which are then applied to guide CNC planning and execution. Project implementation may involve the use of CNC software applications, CNC programming and part creation, testing, troubleshooting, the implementation of ideas and the presentation of findings. Students apply and refine their skills in cutting tool selection, fixturing, cycle times, cost analysis, testing, trouble-shooting and time management.

The course concludes with a formal presentation of the completed project and delivery of a written technical report. Students emerge from this challenging process with a new confidence in their acquired abilities and a deeper practical understanding of technology and all that they have learned.

1. Describe the main elements of CNC project principles and practices, how they apply over the entire life-cycle of the project and how they help to ensure project success.
2. Apply CNC principles directly in the planning, execution, monitoring, control and closing of a technology project.
3. Critically analyze project goals and make compromises amongst competing constraints of scope, cost, time and quality.
4. Demonstrate a working CNC project which satisfies requirements specified in scope statement.
5. Deliver a professional technical presentation.
6. Create drilling toolpaths with rotary axis positioning (milling)
7. Create complex geometries (such as face contours and cross drilling) on a multiaxis lathe.
8. Complete all project requirements within the specified timeframe.
