Women's Studies - Introduction

Subject Description
This general introduction to Women's Studies will examine a broad range of issues surrounding work, education, family, sexuality, health, politics, gender, socialization, language and culture. Historical connections, contemporary topics and debates, as well as future issues and concerns will also be explored. All topics will be approached with attention to the ways in which class, gender, race and ability form women's experiences. Connections between feminist theory and personal experiences are emphasized.

Credit Status
One General Education elective credit in the Sciences and Social Sciences category.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Identify and discuss the key concepts of contemporary feminism in North America
  2. Discuss the historical, social, political, economic and cultural forces that shape our lives relative to gender
  3. Recognize the importance of diversity in the contemporary women’s movement
  4. Analyze the role of culture and socialization in maintaining patriarchy and gender inequality
  5. Critically analyze the social organization of gender, race, and class inequality
  6. Explain the role of feminist or women’s groups in promoting social and political change
  7. Achieve a personal understanding of gender inequality and feminism as indicated
