Introduction to Finance

Subject Description
This course introduces students to the principles and concepts of managerial finance. Sound financial management within a firm creates value by optimizing the allocation of scarce resources through the use of sound analytical tools and techniques as a basis for decision-making. Students will gain an understanding of how firms evaluate projects and assess risks in determining which projects to undertake. The investment decision involves the effective management of working capital; the allocation of capital by means of the capital budgeting decision; and the raising of long-term capital through an appropriate capital structure. Topics studied include working capital budgeting decision; and the raising of long-term capital through an appropriate capital structure. Topics studied include working capital management, the time value of money; the cost of capital; the valuation of assets using discounted cash flow; the selection of the optimal mix of project financing; and the dividend policy. Additionally, students examine issues relating to ethical behaviour and good corporate governance practices.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the goals and functions of Financial Management.
  2. Illustrate the principles and objectives of sound financial management.
  3. Compare specific theories and techniques used to make financing and investment decisions.
  4. Compare sources of short-term and long-term funding in the context of cost, risk, return, and securities valuation.
  5. Explain the requirements for cash flow, working capital and dividends.
  6. Evaluate the financial health of a firm using financial evaluation criteria.
  7. Prepare financial forecasts for a company utilizing the pro-forma income statement, balance sheet and cash budget.
  8. Use present value techniques to determine the value of financial assets such as bonds and stocks.
  9. Integrate working capital management into making financial decisions.
