Business Communications I

Subject Description
Business communication skills are necessary in today's workplace and this subject teaches students how to communicate in a clear, concise, and effective way with emphasis on the audience, purpose and message. Students will learn principles of business communications and have the opportunity to practice preparing powerful written messages using many different communication channels. They will also complete a professional business report and electronic presentation.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Discuss the benefits of communicating effectively in the workplace;
  2. Describe the interaction of three major elements of communication: ideas, words, and media;
  3. Create effective handouts;
  4. Communicate ideas with simple, accurate words that express ideas and have appropriate tone for the message;
  5. Choose when to use formal or informal communication channels tailored to your audience and message;
  6. Write and format clear email messages, to follow standard business conventions;
  7. Structure routine messages to begin with a key idea followed by necessary supporting details;
  8. Use AIDA (attention, interest, desire, action) to structure persuasive messages;
  9. Compose messages for social media channels;
  10. Develop a resume that markets skills and abilities;
  11. Use effective proofreading techniques for all work completed;
  12. List the research methods available for gaining information for business reports;
  13. Pepare a business report and a high impact presentation;
  14. Use the program citing standard for citing research;
  15. Manipulate and display data within a report.
