Subject Title
Criminal Psychology

Subject Description
What makes a psychopath tick? Are they born that way, or are they products of society? Are serial killers really possessed with evil, or do they know exactly what they are doing? In this course, students will study how and why some individuals become criminals and why some actually become killers. You will study what is known about serial killers, stalkers, rapists and criminals. Also, the latest techniques used in criminal profiling and questioning will be examined.

Credit Status
One General Education elective credit in the Sciences and Social Sciences category.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Examine and compare biological versus social explanations for criminality.
2. Discuss and debate ideologies, the role of genes, disease versus personal responsibility in criminal behaviour.
3. Define mental health disorders and criminal psychology; and examine rehabilitation processes, impulsive disorders, and treatment of violent and delinquent individuals.
4. Differentiate between serial killers such as Jack the Ripper, Bundy, Dahmer, Gacy, Bernardo, Gein, Desalvo, Berkowitz etc. and other mass killers.
5. Differentiate and define pedophiles/molesters.
6. Identify and examine the Stalker, also in regard of the victim and their various traits.
7. Study profiling and the work of John Douglas and the other pioneers in the field.
8. Explore how criminal profiling might be used to capture perpetrators and whether it is a credible science.
