Subject Title
Learning to See

Subject Description
This subject is not an "art course", but is structured to assist students in negotiating the complex visual terrain of contemporary society. Its "hands-on" aspects will engage students dynamically with the creative process. It will examine several areas of perception such as new technologies and how they allow us to see what would otherwise be "un-seeable". It also will examine the issue of aesthetics and the question of whether there are universal rules for what humans find pleasing to the eye and why. Other important issues such as differentiating between good and bad information design and preventing ourselves from being overwhelmed by our environment will be tackled head on. Finally, it will look at the most important question of all: how can we ourselves become more creative?
Co-requisite: EAC149 or equivalent.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

- Understand how vision works - the eye/brain connection, light waves
- Understand concepts of 'visual preference' and how they determine aesthetic judgments.
- Know how art and the aesthetics of art are used in everyday life .
- Be aware of some of the technologies available for enhancing our perception
- Know how the creative process and analytical skill sets are related
- Apply 'learning to see' techniques to your own creativity
