Introduction to Social Media and Investigations

Subject Description

This course introduces students to the concept of open source information gathering and analysis of social media content on the web. During this course and through the lens of an investigator, students explore the web to locate open source information related to traditional and cyber-related crimes. Students examine how open source searching interacts with criminal investigations, crime analysis and the criminal law while learning about its evidentiary nature.

  1. Discuss the scope and nature of open source intelligence in Canada.
  2. Apply tactical or strategic analysis to open source intelligence to produce a response or recommendation.
  3. Explore the limits of open source intelligence and the current case law that impacts its use.
  4. Discuss the impact of online content in the furtherance of criminal activity in the real and virtual worlds.
  5. Analyze the future trends of social media analysis in the criminal justice system.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
