Role Development for the Practical Nurse

Subject Description
This course explores the transition from student to health care professional with an emphasis on leadership competencies, teamwork, legislation, the organization of health care, and career planning. Topics studied will focus on the implications for, and application to, the role of the Registered Practical Nurse.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Describe and apply professional leadership styles and skills that support effective performance in a variety of health care settings.
2. Evaluate ones own leadership skills through use of leadership theory and self-reflection.
3. Apply knowledge of conflict resolution skills in order to promote a healthy and safe work environment.
4. Evaluate personal and professional response to change through use of change management theory and self–reflection.
6. Identify and analyze the processes for managing human and financial resources.
7. Identify and analyze workplace environment and organizational culture and their relationship to quality of life, utilization of human resources, practice issues and quality improvement principles, and models of nursing care delivery
8.  Identify and analyze the stages of group dynamics that contribute to effective intra-professional care teams.
9. Describe the elements of effective collaborative practice and delivery of patient-centred care within the intra and inter-professional healthcare team.
10. Identify the role and relationship of the nurse working with the unregulated care provider and assess the learning needs required to safely plan and implement care.
11. Analyze research and evidence-informed practice in relationship to better understand trends, practice standards, and issues in Canada’s health care environment as well as the implications for nursing practice.
12. Examine the structure and organizations of the healthcare system at the international, national, provincial, municipal, and organizational levels.
13. Examine the impacts of how environmental factors and global health affect the health in     Canada and nursing practice.
14. Examine the role of the new graduate RPN in relation to leadership, scope of practice, decision-making, and delegation.
15. Identify and demonstrate strategies for effective career planning, networking, and employment seeking.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
