Geographic Information Systems & Data Management

Subject Description
This course is designed to introduce students to the principles and techniques of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and management of environmental data using ArcGIS software.Lab exercises will emphasize GIS data collection, entry, storage, analysis, output and reporting.The course is designed to teach students methods of basic geospatial analysis using ArcGIS software which are applied to a variety of case studies related to different project based scenarios.

Credit Status
One course credit.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the elements of GIS and Environmental Data Management Systems;
  2. Distinguish vector and raster data structures, and determine the use of each type of data structure;
  3. Apply the principles of scale, projection, and coordinate systems to GIS and solve problems related to the environmental or engineering projects.
  4. Perform basic, scenarios geospatial based ( in both, 2-D&3-D) analyses on data captured and report on findings using ArcGIS software.
  5. Explain typical uses of GIS in environmental or engineering applications such as planning, site assessment and resource management.
  6. Apply the elements of critical thinking to geospatial analytical techniques for developing and managing enviornmental and engineering projects using a GIS platform.
