Contact Lens Theory I

Subject Description
This subject is designed to foster students' understanding of the methodologies used for contact lens fitting and dispensing. Students are introduced to dynamics and properties of contact lens materials, methods of manufacture and optics. Contact lens instruments and fitting theories are included.

One credit toward the Opticianry Diploma Program

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Describe the history, design and the evolution of contact lens materials.

2. Describe the various techniques used to manufacture contact lenses.

3. Compare and contrast the classifications and properties of contact lens materials.

4. Explain the mechanics and function of various contact lens fitting instruments.

5. Correlate the principles of visual and applied optics to contact lens fitting.

6. Summarize the principles and procedures for fitting soft and rigid gas permeable contact lenses.

7. Explain the goals of contact lens fitting and the professional responsibilities of the practitioner.

8. Identify the essential components of a full client assessment for successful contact lens fitting.
