Health and Healing: Introductory Nursing Skills

Subject Description
This course gives the student the opportunity to apply theoretical concepts and practice skills that maintain and promote health and healing with individuals in nursing practice settings. Students will learn and safely demonstrate healing actions in the lab before entering into clinical placement. Resources will include text, on-line learning programs, demonstrations and peer practice sessions.

Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Apply the theory which is the basis for performance of basic nursing skills.
2. Use appropriate equipment and demonstrate basic nursing skills in a safe and competent manner.
3. Follow the standards of practice concerning client privacy and confidentiality.
4. Apply knowledge from other disciplines in the practice of basic clinical skills.
5. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of beginnings skills for documentation (e.g. Flow sheets).
6. Understand the principles of infection control and the role of the nurse in preventing infection.

  3. Participate in the ongoing transformation and humanization of health care by incorporating multiple ways of knowing, evidence-informed care and critical-reflective practice.
    1. Demonstrate critical-reflective, client-centred care in simple clinical situations, using multiple ways of knowing in providing evidence-informed care.
  4. Commit to excellence in professional practice through lifelong learning.
    1. Recognize and value personal learning as a professional nurse.
  5. Establish and maintain collaborative relationships within nursing, the interprofessional team and the community.
    1. Initiate relationships by demonstrating respect for and being present with clients, nurses, and other health care providers.
  6. Demonstrate leadership for the advancement of the nursing profession in all domains of practice.
    1. Recognize the image and the contribution of the nursing profession in society and undertake a leadership role in peer groups.
  7. Advocate for and support healthy organizational and public policy to promote health of individuals, families, groups, communities and global populations.
    1. Identify situations where advocacy is indicated, exploring the influences of determinants of health on individuals’ health and wellness.
  8. Provide culturally sensitive nursing care that honours human dignity, respects diversity, and embraces different ways of being.
    1. Recognize diverse and cultural understandings of health and wellness in stable client situations and in the learning environment.
