Non-Profit and Social Sector Management, Work Term

Subject Description
This work term will provide students with a college-approved work experience in a variety of small to large nonprofit organizations and associations, in administration, database management, fundraising outreach, event planning and management and volunteer coordinator roles.
 
In this course, students will apply skills learned in the academic setting as well as gain new workplace skills. Students will interact with industry professionals while developing and expanding their critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills in a professional work environment. Through the work experience, students will gain an understanding of workplace accountabilities for their role, the role of team members and leaders in the workplace. The work experience will also provide the student with a variety of situations and opportunities to further develop their listening and communication skills, both oral and written, as pertinent to the job function and industry requirements.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Develop a reflective practice; link past, present and future experiences and integrate cognitive and emotional experiences.
  2. Evaluate the ability to adapt to workplace culture and meet workplace expectations in order to support development of workplace skills.
  3. Assess the management of professional interactions and responsibilities in the workplace, specific to roles and accountabilities.
  4. Develop communication skills by applying written and oral communication, in addition to listening skills, to a variety of workplace situations.
  5. Evaluate professionalism in relation to self-management, personal strengths and challenges, and ethical working styles.
  6. Integrate knowledge and skills gained in the academic setting with workplace experiences.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
