Applied Business Management

Subject Description
This course investigates how individuals, groups & structure affect behaviour within organizations. Discussions include: evolution of organizational structure & design; workplace productivity, employee skills & technology demands; conflict resolution & interpersonal skills; Canadian legislation & law as it relates to workplace discrimination & harassment; as well as managing change. In addition, students develop a business plan that takes into account the major forces at work in the marketing environment. 

Credit Status
MRK360 is a credit subject for the 2-year Business-Marketing Diploma Program and the 3-year Business Administration Marketing Diploma Program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Explain how organizational behaviour can improve quality, productivity, interpersonal relationships and stimulate innovation and change in organizations.

2. Critically analyze interpersonal situations using knowledge of classifications of individual behaviour and recognize effective communication strategies.

3. Assess team organization and demonstrate team building skills.

4. Analyze types of leadership and explain how leadership can be used to build credibility and trust.

5. Differentiate between different types of conflict and utilize conflict negotiation skills to improve communications.

6. Apply principles and theories of motivation to individual and group behaviour and organizational performance and apply motivation to accommodate diversity and achieve job satisfaction.

7. Illustrate how organizations manage changes in culture and overcome employee resistance.

8. Develop strategies to enhance interpersonal skills.

9. Apply principles of business ethics and corporate social responsibility.

10. Develop a business plan that meets stated objectives and that takes into account the major forces at work in the marketing environment.
