Introduction to Mental Health and Addiction

Subject Description

Mental health practice and substance abuse practice overlap and are practiced together in the community sector. This is an introductory course that will explore the traditional biological and social paradigms in both mental health/illness and addictions/problematic substance abuse, the BPS and harm reduction approaches to both, and related concepts such as mental health policy, helping and health systems and medical/psycho-social interventions. Students will also be introduced to the social determinants of mental health, and the relationship between mental health, addiction and oppression, with a particular focus on race, culture and sexual/gender identity. The course will also focus on contemporary community mental health and addictions context in Canada, specifically Ontario.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Discuss key concepts related to mental health and substance use/abuse.
  2. Explore diagnostic categories based on the medical model and related concepts like the DSM.
  3. Demonstrate understanding of the current context of mental health and addictions practice including policy, practice paradigms and interventions.
  4.  Analyze common assumptions and misconceptions related to mental illness ad problematic substance use.
  5. Identify current treatment approaches and intervention strategies.
