Subject Title
Effective Leadership

Subject Description
To attain business and personal success, we need to understand who we are and how we affect others. What traits, competencies and behaviour will help motivate team members? How can change be facilitated within the organization?  To assist in this challenge, students will explore leadership through theory, application and skill development.  Students will develop personal effectiveness skills that will assist them in their group and leadership roles. Through projects, exercises, self and peer assessment/evaluations, participants will clarify and develop their current leadership skills. Students will be assigned a Leadership Coach.

Credit Status
One credit.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Define, analyze and apply leadership theories to case studies.
  2. Compare and contrast various communication modes as a leader in team and organizational structures.
  3. Compare the differences between a group and a team. Identify the six characteristics of effective teams through in-class assignments.
  4. Explain the leader's role in creating a culture that supports diversity and the creation of a learning organization.
  5. Explain and assess the importance of negotiation and conflict, influencing tactics, and power and politics through case studies and role-playing.

Communicate clearly, concisely and correctly in the written, spoken and visual form that fulfils the purpose and meets the needs of the audience.

Use a variety of thinking skills to anticipate and solve problems.

Analyze, evaluate, and apply relevant information from a variety of sources.

Show respect for diverse opinions, values, belief systems, and contributions of others.

Take responsibility for one's own actions, decisions, and consequences.
