Professional Conduct and Career Development

Subject Description
It is essential that law clerks possess excellent communication skills and knowledge of recruitment practices in order to advance their careers in the legal sector.  This course provides law clerk students with an overview of application processes, workplace standards, and current industry trends in career development.  Students learn how to expand their professional networks, and develop their presentation abilities and practical problem-solving skills as necessitated by the recruitment process.  In collaboration with the School of Leadership and Human Resources, students will produce a professional resume and cover letter, participate in a simulated interview process, and utilize professional online platforms such as LinkedIn as tools to develop their employment marketability and advance their careers. 

Credit Status
This is a credit subject applicable towards the Law Clerk Diploma and Law Clerk Accelerated Diploma programs offered through the School of Legal, Public & Office Administration.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of professional standards and recruitment processes used within the legal industry.
  2. Collaborate with students from the School of Leadership and Human Resources to prepare for and participate in a virtual interview.
  3. Produce a LinkedIn profile, cover letter, and resume and utilize these resources for the simulated recruitment process.
  4. Manage the use of time and other resources to complete projects and communicate with colleagues in an effective and timely manner.
  5. Demonstrate an attitude of professionalism, as evidenced by an ability to meet deadlines, complete assignments as scheduled.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
