Subject Title
Legal Transcription

Subject Description
This subject is designed to develop proficiency in the transcription of legal machine-dictated materials. To this end, authentic legal dictation is utilized in order to provide the student with exposure to actual legal situations. Emphasis will be placed on the development of legal vocabulary and on the reinforcement of English language skills: punctuation, spelling, proofreading, and grammar. Through the use of the latest version of Word, students will learn style and format guidelines in order to prepare legal correspondence and documents to mailable business standards.

Credit Status
LTR 511 is a required credit for students enrolled in the one-year compressed Office Administration Legal Diploma Program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Apply knowledge of English language rules to legal transcription as appropriate in legal offices.

2. Develop correct proofreading techniques.

3. Use reference materials appropriately and efficiently to facilitate accuracy of legal correspondence and documents.

4. Show an ability to operate designated transcription equipment and use Word to create legal correspondence and documents.

5. Develop time management and organizational skills necessary for success in an office environment.

6. Produce all required assignments and tests to acceptable business standards within prescribed time limits.

7. Follow verbal and written instructions.

8. Demonstrate an attitude of professionalism, as evidenced by an ability to meet deadlines, complete assignments and perform tests and in-class assingments as scheduled.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
