Presentation Skills

Subject Description
This subject prepares students to make professional oral presentations to diverse audiences in a variety of settings. The fundamentals of public speaking and speech writing are covered, as well as the production and use of presentational aids. Students will be in introduced to Microsoft PowerPoint and Adobe Photoshop. They will familiarize themselves with presentation techniques using both PowerPoint and Photoshop's raster based imaging manipulation and other Presentation aids.

Pre-requisite: ENG205 or its equivalent

Credit Status
LSP400 is a required subject in the Human Resources Strategy and Technology and International Accounting and Finance Degree programs.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Explain why improving their speaking skills are important to them.
2. Utilize a number of strategies designed to minimize the fear associated with public speaking.
3. Discuss the communication process and, based on this model, identify and explain typical communication challenges faced by public speakers.
4. Prepare a presentation plan that clearly outlines the purpose of the presentation, an outline of the audience, and the objectives for the presentation.
5. Given a scenario, design several different openings for the presentation based on changes to the purpose, audience or type of speech.
6. Given a scenario, design several different closings for the presentation based on changes to the purpose, audience or type of speech.
7. Demonstrate various uses of the voice to enhance the presentation message.
8. Demonstrate various uses of body language to enhance the presentation message.
9. Given a topic, prepare a five-minute, impromptu presentation that incorporates the concepts of planning and delivery.
10. Given a list of criteria, evaluate the presentations of other participants, providing feedback that will help the other participants improve their presentation skills.
