Science Fiction

Subject Description
This course will explore how Science Fiction addresses real-world socio-political issues, including mechanization and dehumanization, gender construction, and the challenges to the human under the aegis of posthumanism.  Through diverse fictions, students will be exposed to the historical development of Science Fiction, focusing almost exclusively on English-language short stories, novels, and/or comic books, although television and film may be used (where relevant).

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Define and explain key science fiction terms and critical concepts to further develop critical thinking and language skills.
  2. Explore science fiction texts to classify and compare different genres and sub-genres in the field.
  3. Assess and delve into science fiction as literature that simultaneously entertains and speaks to contemporary socio-political issues.
  4. Evaluate science fiction to discuss and assess key political systems in Western culture.
  5. Apprise the intersections of ‘fiction’ and ‘reality’ that make meaningful connections between literature and real-world conditions.
  6. Apply stylistic and research conventions that enhance organizational and communication skills, particularly in written and/or oral assignments.
