Going Public

Subject Description

Going public is a milestone in the life of a company. At some point in their evolution, many private companies find that their need for capital to continue their strategic growth and seize marketplace opportunities exceeds their ability to find additional funding on attractive terms. It's at this point that many decide to go public. 
 
That decision sets off a rigorous, demanding process that requires the company have a well-thought-through investor relations strategy to position the company in the marketplace, to introduce the company to individual and institutional investors and to explain its investment proposition.

In IRM 805, students will learn about the benefits and responsibilities that come with the decision to go public, the nine steps involved in the process and the participants that make it happen. They will also learn about and have the opportunity to practice many of the investor communications activities involved in taking a company public, in developing an investor relations strategy and objectives and in effective shareholder relations once the company is public.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  • Identify the key players involved and the roles they play, in taking a company public
  • Apply investor relations techniques to introducing a company to the investment community
  • Define and discuss the nine steps involved in taking a company public
  • Define and discuss the strategies, terms, processes and critical success factors in going public
  • Draft key investor relations communications components involved in the going-public process
  • Apply to IR practice knowledge of the responsibilities, disclosure requirements and costs a company faces once it is listed on the stock exchange

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
