Introduction to Adaptive Web Design

Subject Description
This comprehensive web development course introduces students to HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript, enabling them to create and design web pages. Alongside technical skills, the course introduces students to accessible requirements and considerations in web development. Students learn to create web experiences and explore optimizing performance and minimizing environmental impact. By the end of the course, students will have built web pages and gained proficiency in web development tools while also understanding the importance of creating sustainable and accessible web experiences.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

 
  • Understand the basics of web development and the role of HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript in creating web pages.
  • Build simple web pages considering a Balance between functionality, aesthetics, ethics and usability in their designs.
  • Use CSS layouts and animation to create responsive and user-friendly experiences.
  • Identify and recall responsive design principles and techniques to create web pages.
  • Assess CSS rules to style and layout web pages modifying page elements.
  • Examine the basics of JavaScript, including variables and functions.
  • Respect the accessibility standards and principles in web development, ensuring inclusivity and user-friendliness.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
