History in the Time of William Shakespeare

Subject Description
This course covers selected topics in the social, political, legal, economic and literary history of England during the Tudor period and the lifetime of the great English writer William Shakespeare. Drawing upon a variety of academic disciplines and using a biographical approach to the subject, INH564 introduces students to an exciting period in English history that included not just Shakespeare but the monarchs like Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.

Credit Status
Professional optional course credit for students in the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies degree program; also a Liberal Studies Option (LSO) for Seneca degree students.

  2. Analyze the meaning and context of historical primary documents.
  3. Explain the meaning and context of historical documents with reference to class notes and secondary historical sources.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of discipline- and subject-specific vocabulary.
  5. Identify key terms related to the history of England in the Tudor/Stuart period.
  6. Define key terms related to the history of England in the Tudor/Stuart period.
  7. Outline cultural, social, legal, and intellectual developments in England during the Tudor/Stuart period.
  8. Demonstrate higher-level writing ability in a variety of academic formats.
  9. Develop higher-level academic research skills using both print and electronic sources.
  10. Develop and use a working knowledge of common software for academic research, writing, and online interaction.
  11. Demonstrate ability to interact with professors and other students using electronic media such as Blackboard.
  12. Develop critical thinking skills.
  13. Analyze and understand ideas in their historical context.
  14. Distinguish between different explanations for historical events.
  15. Differentiate and evaluate different historiographic approaches to history writing.
  16. Synthesize facts and ideas in writing coherent argumentative essays.
