The History of the United States: Learning Through Biography, 1865 - Present

Subject Description

This course covers selected topics in the social, political, legal, and economic history of the United States since 1865. Drawing upon a variety of academic disciplines and using a thematic approach to the subject, INH500 introduces students to the history of the United States from the end of the Civil War to the present through the lens of selected historical biographies.

Credit Status

An upper-level Humanities breadth option for the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies; also an upper-level Liberal Studies Option in the Humanities category for Seneca Degree Students.

1.          Record and summarize in study notes the major themes of classroom lectures.

2.          Analyze the meaning and context of historical primary documents.

3.          Explain the meaning and context of historical documents with reference to class notes and secondary historical sources.

4.          Demonstrate knowledge of discipline- and subject-specific vocabulary.

5.          Identify key terms related to the history of U.S. History.

6.          Define key terms related to the history of the U.S.

7.          Outline cultural, social, legal, and intellectual developments in U.S. society since 1865.

8.          Demonstrate higher-level writing ability in a variety of academic formats.

9.          Develop and use a working knowledge of common software for academic research, writing, and online interaction.

10.      Demonstrate ability to interact with professors and other students using electronic media such as Blackboard.

11.      Develop critical thinking skills.

12.      Analyze and understand ideas in their historical context.

13.      Distinguish between different explanations for historical events.

14.      Differentiate and evaluate different historiographic approaches to history writing.

15.      Synthesize facts and ideas in writing coherent argumentative essays.
