Subject Title
Integrating Attachment and Brain Development

Subject Description
Students will examine how attachment affects development, what effect caregiving has on attachment and how early attachments affect relationships in later life.  Students will investigate the ways the brain functions, grows and responds to environmental factors.  Students will examine the link between early adversity, brain development, and gene expression with the goal of leveraging the science of brain development to support the mental health of infants, young children and their families.  The connection between attachment and brain development will be explored.

Credit Status
IMH 105 is a process course.  Students are required to attend a minimum of 75% of face to face classes in order to be eligible to earn a passing grade.

  1. Identify the architecture of the brain, major functions, and the process of brain maturation in infants and young children.
  2. Identify patterns of caregiver-child interactions and behaviours associated with different styles of attachment and the implications these have across the lifespan.
  3. Examine factors contributing to healthy brain development and secure attchment in infancy in a range of settings.
  4. Interpret the impact of epigenetic factors on brain development and behaviour in various contexts.
  5. Analyze the developmental continuum of executive functioning and self-regulation in children.
  6. Recommend strategies that promote positive mental health for infants and young children grounded in current literature on the connection between attachment and brain development.
