Strategic Supervision and Leadership

Subject Description

This course prepares students to engage in a "hands-on" approach as managers and supervisors to help them effectively work with people. This subject will focus on skills required for effective supervision. The course will also cover managing work place operations, job design, and monitoring of work performance, and explore the nature of leaders and leadership as they relate to supervision. Students will apply practical skills to the real world setting.

Credit Status
One credit towards the Tourism Services Management - Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, Conferences & Events Specialization Diploma.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the role of a supervisor / leader in a hospitality operation
  2. Apply effective communication skills, including effective listening, speaking, and writing skills
  3. Practice techniques to develop and improve skills in orienting and training.
  4. Organize and conduct a meeting with an agenda, time frames and task lists.
  5. Contribute to the development of an orientation, and conduct basic training using multiple learning techniques.
  6. Identify management and leadership styles.
  7. Apply techniques to develop and enhance evaluating and coaching skills.
  8. Explore techniques to develop and enhance an effective discipline program.
  9. Apply techniques and principles of group dynamics to team work and team building.
  10. Practice principles of conflict, stress and time management for successful relationships.
  11. Recognize the importance of staff empowerment to a business.
  12. Apply professional standards of business etiquette, dress, hygiene and grooming consistent with Hospitality and Tourism industry business standards.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
