Subject Title
Hardware Software Interfacing

Subject Description

This course explores the integration of electronics systems through methods of hardware interfacing and software programming. Students will build upon their knowledge of simple DC circuits by examining the principles and applications for circuit designs containing more advanced components, such as diodes, transistors, temperature sensors, optical sensors, buzzers, servo motors, and operational amplifiers. By first analyzing these circuits in the lectures and then constructing and troubleshooting them in the labs, students are able to investigate practical applications that contain both analog and digital inputs and outputs. The circuits will be modified to interface with a data acquisition unit programmed in C language. A lab project draws together the key elements from this course. Students emerge with comprehensive and practical hands-on experience in basic electronic device integration, which provides a foundation for subsequent studies.

Credit Status
One Subject Credit within the Computer Engineering Technology (ECT) Program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Apply circuit-building and design techniques to demonstrate the safe operation of selected components.

2. Program applications in C language to send and receive signals via hardware GPIO ports.

3. Identify and interpret data from component datasheets and equipment lab manuals.

4. Assemble and test modular segments of hardware and software applications that can be incorporated into larger systems.

5. Interface a LabJack data acquisition unit using hardware connections and software programming.

6. Investigate and operate signal processing techniques through hardware and software means.

7. Use lab software to design and manufacture a printed circuit board.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
