Textiles for Fashion

Subject Description
Textile Fundamentals is an introduction to the study of textiles, and this second level of study further examines the four main elements of a textile (fibre, yarn, fabric, and finish). This course will help the student develop a critical appreciation of quality differences among textile elements; and, how these differences impact textile performance / suitability in current fashion trends. Through lecture and activities, the student will be expected to practice identifying the various textile elements in order to build confidence and a greater understanding of textiles.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Recognize and identify basic textiles by name and recommend appropriate end uses and/or alternatives;
  2. Analyze current fashion trends from a textile perspective and identify the impact of textile on the trend;
  3. Examine, compare and contrast textiles on future forecasted trends;
  4. Demonstrate the principles of textile end use, suitability, and performance through the development of a fashion collection;
  5. Develop collections that accommodate and integrate more than one textile element;
  6. Demonstrate the ability to work within assigned time frames to meet deadlines.
