Fitness for Firefighters

Subject Description
FFF101 is a fitness subject designed to be both theoretical and practical, combining traditional classroom activity and practical application of health and fitness theory. Students participate in lectures and practical physical fitness and health activities that:1) present how the body responds and adapts to exercise stress, and 2) explore contemporary fitness and health issues.

Credit Status
One credit toward the Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training Ontario College Certificate

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1) Identify relevant functional anatomy with respect to exercise.
2) Recognize the role of health and physical fitness in personal and professional life.
3) Understand the physical training model.
4) Apply the training model to self for health and job tasks.
5) Identify risk factors related to health and job tasks.
6) Interpret personal fitness appraisal information.
7) Implement an immediate fitness and health strategy.
8) Design a post-course personal health and occupationally related fitness strategy.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
