Writing Strategies

Subject Description
This course focuses on critical thinking and the rhetorical elements of both persuasive and evaluative forms of writing. Students will learn to differentiate among shades of fact and opinion and between objectivity and bias, and to apply the techniques of sound argument for a variety of purposes. The main elements of effective communication and research techniques are also examined. 

Credit Status
ENG106 or its equivalent is a required course in most of Seneca's degree programs.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Apply the elements of critical thinking to reading and writing.
2. Respond appropriately to diversity of opinion and conflicting points of view.
3. Avoid, through recognition, bias and logical fallacies.
4. Synthesize others' ideas from verbal and written communication.
5. Apply sound persuasive techniques.
6. Demonstrate effective evaluative and research writing using argumentative and analytical techniques.
7. Assess the strength and validity of others' writing.
8. Employ correct grammar, punctuation and sentence mechanics in written assignments.

Essential Employability Skills
Communicate clearly, concisely and correctly in the written, spoken and visual form that fulfils the purpose and meets the needs of the audience.

Respond to written, spoken, or visual messages in a manner that ensures effective communication.

Use a variety of thinking skills to anticipate and solve problems.
