Subject Title
Entrepreneurship

Subject Description
Do entrepreneurs have a different mindset? Have they figured out the formula for success? This subject is for students who are interested in starting, buying or growing a small business, including a family business, franchise, home business, social enterprise, and eco-business. The course provides students with new approaches towards the identification and screening of viable business opportunities that are most appropriate for their business background and entrepreneurial skills.

Credit Status
EBM 510 is a required subject for the Business Administration: Entrepreneurship and Small Business Diploma Program and an option for other programs in the School of Business Management.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of entrepreneurship by discussing examples of current entrepreneurs, including business owners, social entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, free-lancers, and ecopreneurs along with their companies and their importance to the economy.

2. Research sources of support for SME's (Small Medium Enterprises). Sources would include government offices, associations, financial institutions, magazines, books, web sites and social media.

3. Demonstrate effective networking at an industry event and by using social media including Linked In.

4. Demonstrate entrepreneurial qualities such as commitment, determination, and perseverance in the process of achieving course outcomes.

5. Identify and assess opportunities and ideas in the marketplace, for new business ventures.

6. Discuss factors to consider in choosing between starting a business or buying an existing business.

7. Appraise franchise agreements from the viewpoint of the franchisee and the franchisor.

8. Discuss issues concerning how to take over a family business.

9. Discuss initiatives relevant to entrepreneurs such as green business practices, social enterprises, and the development and protection of intellectual property.
