Theories of Music, Movement and Dramatic Play

Subject Description
This subject explores the principles, methods and materials for woking with children and preteens usng music, movement and dramatic play through process-oriented experiences. Stdents will participate inactviies to develop practical musical skills enabling students to use music to support children of all ages in various environments. The benefits of musical experiences throughout childhood, including child development and brain development will be investgated.


Credit Status

EAD 404 is a required subject in the Bachelor of Child Development.

Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

Upon successful completion, the student is able to:

1.  Justify the inclusion of music in educational, recreational and therapeutic settings based on current knowledge of brain development.

2.  Demonstrate skills in singing, playing an instrument, movement and drama in order to lead or support others in variety of contexts.

3.  Assess past and present theorists/music pedagoges, family, community and political systems to determine their impact on music learning.

4.  Create teaching strategies in creativity, aesthetic development and composition with children.

5   Investigate careers which could include music to identify future employement opportunities.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
