Advanced Database Design

Subject Description
This course builds upon the knowledge gained in DBS610 and introduces the student to advanced data management systems.  Students will extend their knowledge of SQL through aggregation, data summation, and advanced techniques to support distributed business applications.  Students will explore advanced database objects to support software application development in real business scenarios.  The course will introduce students to non-traditional database management systems through an introduction to document-oriented NoSQL data stores.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  • Apply advanced SQL coding methods to aggregate stored data into useful information supporting everyday business decision making processes 
  • Correctly create, document, and deploy advanced database objects to actively support modern business software application architecture 
  • Accurately describe a variety of database management system types, their basic architecture, and how they would be applied correctly in a variety of real business scenarios 
  • Correctly download, install, and configure a variety of different database management systems for use in business software development environments 
  • Apply a variety of security techniques to assist in the prevention of the most common data and software vulnerabilities through encryption and parameterization 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic command to create and maintain a business focused document-oriented NoSQL database management system

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
