Subject Title
Myths, Dreams, and Consciousness

Subject Description
This subject explores the symbolic and unconscious nature of dreams, a point of view supported by Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell and others. It suggests that our dreams can be meaningful in that we can learn from their analysis, and it examines the connection between dream content and the symbolism intrinsic to both ancient and modern mythologies of some ?eastern? and ?western? cultural traditions.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

Successful completion of this subject will enable the student to:

  1. Describe the sleep cycle.
  2. Evaluate the significance of the ‘activation-synthesis theory of dreams’.
  3. Describe two approaches to interpreting dreams and demonstrate their applications.
  4. Explain the meaning of the Jungian terms ‘archetype’, ‘shadow’ and ‘collective unconscious’.
  5. Discuss the nature and significance of archetypal patterns.
  6. Define mythology as articulated by Joseph Campbell and explain its societal significance.
  7. Explain how ceremonial dances of aboriginal cultures were  an example of mythology brought to life.
  8. Describe the ‘hero cycle’ as a psychological allegory.
  9. Identify the psychological relationship that existed between mythology and the individual.
  10. Compare the metaphorical nature and significance of dreams to that of myth.
