Subject Title
China and the World

Subject Description
China and the World is a multidisciplinary education in pre-modern and modern China. The people of China have made contributions to world knowledge in writing and literature, medicine, philosophy, religion, science, technology, social organization, etc. The influential philosophies of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism have been with us for over 2,000 years and cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong are centers of international importance. By studying its historical development and relations, cultural components and political and economic orientations in the modern world, students will acquire an understanding of why some sinologists proclaim "the 21st century will belong to China".

Credit Status
One General Education elective credit in the Arts and Humanities category.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

. Provide a general outline of Chinese history
. Describe the geographic and ethnic diversity of China
. Define and discuss the different political, social, ethic religious ideologies that have influenced Chinese thinking and the development of Chinese culture
. Identify both the major political and economic developments in China and their influence on social and legal policies
. Describe the political and social organizations in modern China and identify their historical antecedents
