The 1960s

Subject Description
This course explores cultural, social, and political changes in North America during the 1960s, with particular attention to Canadian perspectives and events and to the student movements of the time.  For many people, this decade evokes positive images of social activism, idealism, and liberating cultural revolution.  For others, it represents destructive rebellion, a corruption of traditional values, and irresponsible lifestyles. 
 
Whether the decade is viewed romantically or cynically, most people would agree that it witnessed widespread and often radical changes in areas such as civil rights, social and environmental concerns, feminism, sexuality, youth culture and music, fashion, technology, and the arts.  We will examine the origins of these changes, their major aspects, and their lasting impact.  Although many of the predominant issues have origins outside Canada, such as the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement, we will try to understand how Canada changed in the 1960s and how contemporary Canadian society compares.
