Justice Administration Procedures

Subject Description
This course is designed to provide an overview of the role of court staff in different court and tribunal settings. The student will gain knowledge about the general court room practices within provincial and federal courts and tribunals through observation and formal lecture. Students will examine the role of court/tribunal staff to learn courtroom and tribunal etiquette and decorum, hearing and administrative practices and procedures. The student will be sensitized to the proper ethical conduct and confidentiality required to work in a court and tribunal environment.

Credit Status
This is a credit course applicable toward the Court and Tribunal Administration Diploma Program, offered through the School of Legal and Public Administration.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Describe and distinguish the roles and responsibilities of staff that support court and tribunal hearings.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of hearing room practices and procedures before a sample court or tribunal.

3. Understand the general steps involved in processing a claim or an appeal.

4. Demonstrate an understanding of case preparation for presentation before a court/tribunal and the requisite maintenance of a log of proceedings.

5. Apply correct terminology in courtroom and tribunal proceedings (e.g. party identification, document identification, court official recognition).

6. Demonstrate an understanding of a tribunal's obligations to the parties.

7. Demonstrate an attitude of professionalism, as evidenced by an ability to meet deadlines, complete assignments and perform tests and in-class assignments as scheduled.
