Subject Title
Chemical Instrumentation

Subject Description
This subject provides students with an overview of common spectrophotometric instruments. Topics covered include colorimetry, ultraviolet, visible and infrared region spectrophotometry, fluorimetry, and turbidity/nephelometry. The theory of these instrumental methods will be supported by proper interpretation of analytical data and mathematical techniques for preparing standards and samples.

One credit towards the Chemical Engineering Technology (CHY) Advanced Diploma
Chemical Laboratory Technician - Pharmaceutical (CLP) Advanced Diploma.

Upon completion of the classroom sessions, learners will be able to:

  • Categorize colorimetric, visible, ultraviolet, infrared, and fluorimetric instruments according to their operational principles.
  • Prepare schematics of analytical instruments to indicate the function of the instruments and their components.
  • Compare the capabilities and operational limits of each respective instrument in order to select the optimal analytical method.
  • Calculate reagent concentrations in analytical samples of unknown concentration based on instrumental response.
  • Determine reagent concentrations in serial dilutions of aqueous samples to facilitate the preparation of experimental methods.
  • Recall the development and evolution of instruments and instrumental methods to assist in troubleshooting, maintenance, and calibration.
Learning Outcomes: Laboratory
Upon completion of the laboratory sessions, learners will be able to:
  • Operate and maintain visible, ultraviolet, infrared, and fluorimetric instruments in order to produce analytical results.
  • Utilize quasi-instrumental methods such as blot colorimetry to estimate concentrations of unknowns.
  • Prepare single and multi-component standards and their associated blanks to construct calibration curves.
  • Estimate concentrations of unknown samples by referencing calibration curves.
  • Identify functional groups in organic molecules using liquid and mulled samples analysed with an infrared spectrometer.
  • Handle hazardous materials in accordance with good laboratory practice and relevant safety legislation.
