Subject Title
Bioinformatics II

Subject Description
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will: have an appreciation of the basic problems facing bioinformatics scientists, the roles that bioinformatics plays in the solution of these problems, a basic understanding of bioinformatics methodologies, and skills using available bioinformatics analysis tools. A group project in the design and creation of a novel bioinformatics tool is a major component of this course (Independent Group Project).

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1)    Demonstrate a working knowledge of commonly used databases that house bioinformatics data related to DNA and proteins, including understanding how the data is stored, accessed, and inter-related with other databases and tools.
2)    Demonstrate the ability to choose and use an appropriate analysis tool for various DNA and protein analyses, including visualization analyses associated with large sets of data.
3)    Perform molecular structure prediction (RNA, DNA, protein), and understand the results as they relate to the associated theories and methodologies available.
4)    Demonstrate the ability to understand biological problems in terms of bioinformatics solutions, and to be able to design and implement bioinformatics solutions.
5)    Demonstrate the ability to address bioinformatics related problems from various disciplines, including research, development, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, marketing, software development, software testing, and technical writing.
