Applied Statistics

Subject Description
Statistical analysis is involved in many areas of Bioinformatics. A clear understanding of how statistics are used, and the interpretation of their results, is important in drawing proper conclusions. The intent of this course is to provide students with a fundamental understanding of some statistical approaches, with a specific examination and interpretation of statistics used in Bioinformatics.

Credit Status
One credit towards the Bioinformatics (BIF) post-diploma program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Understand the importance of statistical analysis in bioinformatics
  2. Understand and perform common statistical procedures used in bioinformatics and subsequently interpret the results
  3. Identify and apply the relevant statistical procedure(s) for a given bioinformatics problem
  4. Navigate and conduct analyses using the R statistical programming language
  5. Navigate the GNU Octave language for numerical computation
