Subject Title
Energy Technologies

Subject Description
This subject will introduce students to both passive and active renewable energy technologies, including passive energy elements in structural design; passive and active solar heating and cooling; and bio-fuels. The course stresses a fully integrated, Positive Net Energy design strategy for the built environment.

Credit Status
One subject credit.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. describe the need for renewable energy technologies in today’s energy market.
  2. distinguish site characteristics to determine appropriate energy technology usage.
  3. describe the basic operation and integration of passive energy technologies.
  4. describe the operation of the basic components in several solar and geothermal sustainable energy systems.
  5. describe the basic composition and production of biofuels.
  6. explain the operation of the basic components of bio-fuel production systems.
  7. demonstrate the comparative benefits and limitations of each technology studied.
  8. design renewable energy systems using set procedures.
