Subject Title
Strategic Financial Planning - Facilities

Subject Description
This subject provides an overview of today's strategic and financial planning techniques for facility management. Budgeting, materials procurement and management, work order systems, work planning and scheduling, cost control concepts and techniques, and use of computers in facility management are some of the topics that are covered. A prime focus of this subject is to raise the awareness of efficient energy and environmental management and to control such costs through effective planning and budgeting, and other financial techniques.

Credit Status
One credit toward the Building Environmental Systems (BES) Facility Manager Certificate

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Prepare a cash budget, capital budget and an operating budget for a facility department.

2. Recognize and design an effective materials procurement, management and control system for a facility department.

3. Plan, schedule and control the work of a facility department.

4. Recognize the principles for designing an effective organizational structure for a facility department.

5. Apply techniques to effectively control the costs of operating an organization's physical facilities, including salaries and wages, costs of energy, fuel and oil, supplies, and other overhead costs.

6. Recognize the importance of efficient energy and environmental management and apply different accounting or financial techniques in such management.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
