Open Systems Server

Subject Description
This project-based subject will teach students how to install and configure Linux servers. Further, students will learn how to connect to and communicate over a network in a controlled environment. They will learn how to manage their files on their system and how to set-up file and directory permissions. Students will manage basic system security and firewall settings. In order to automate configuring their systems, students will expand their knowledge of basic Unix/Linux commands and be exposed to scripting basics. Finally students will work with both text and graphical user interfaces

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  • Install a multi-function Open Source server to deliver standard services to multiple users on a network.
  • Create OS installation and software update policies to maintain a server's integrity and security.
  • Install software packages to customize server functions.
  • Manage storage devices to maximize server performance and organization.
  • Create virtual machines and virtual networks to increase network services and options while maintaining the same physical footprint.
  • Manage user accounts to provide customized and secure access to appropriate network services and applications.
  • Demonstrate the ability to create backups and restore data to minimize system downtime.
  • Compose scripts to automate common system administration tasks
  • Interpret and modify scripts written in common languages to predict their effect on a system

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
