WIR407 - Mental Health and Addiction

Prerequisites:

All module 1 & 2 courses

This course is divided into two distinct but interrelated sections: 1) Mental Health; 2) Addiction. By relying on an anti-oppression framework and emphasizing on the communities' strengths and resiliencies in coping and responding to mental health and addiction issues, the course will provide students with the basic knowledge to critically analyze factors contributing to issues of mental health and substance use; understand fundamental concepts in mental health and addiction; learn terminology and the range of diagnosis; understand the impact of stigma that hinders seeking help and/or access to services; distinguish gender differences in responding to psycho-social stressors; learn about harm reduction strategies; and identify the existing service delivery, their gaps and overlaps for the purpose of referral.
